Summer PD Opportunities: Art and Photo Workshops for Teachers

Explore, Create, and Recharge: A Studio Art Workshop for Educators Reignite your creativity this summer with a hands-on, immersive workshop designed to nourish your inner artist while expanding your toolbox of techniques. Over four dynamic days, you’ll explore drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media in a supportive studio environment.

Each day offers new activities and materials, encouraging experimentation, personal expression, and skill development. This workshop is ideal for all experience levels—from beginners seeking artistic confidence to experienced educators and practicing artists looking to recharge, reflect, and produce meaningful work.

All adult students are welcome to use the studio space and materials for personal artistic development. As time allows, we’ll also share ideas for integrating visual arts into content-based learning and aligning creative practices with curriculum standards.

Photography Workshop:

This summer workshop is designed for educators who want to explore photography both as a personal creative practice and as a tool for classroom engagement. Whether completely new to photography or looking to sharpen skills, this workshop offers a supportive, hands-on environment to learn and grow.

Daily photo challenges will be based around learning manual camera settings to control exposure, exploring approachable composition techniques to strengthen imagery, and learning the basics of photo editing using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance and finalize images.

All levels are welcome. Educators will leave with an understanding of the power of photography and will discover the art of seeing through the lens.

Additionally, we will discuss how to bring photography into the classroom, with ideas for standards-aligned projects across content areas.

We can provide cameras for use upon request.

Explore your inner artist and develop a variety of skills. Activities and projects will change from day to day, and they will include drawing, painting, printmaking, and the use of different media.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels, from those who have little or no experience to veteran artists and art educators, who can use the time for their own personalized artistic development using the classroom's equipment. As time allows, we can discuss how to apply art skills and content to standards-based learning on other topics in the regular classroom setting.

As part of our school's evaluation process we are asked to create a yearly Student Learning Goal.
My goal this year is Growth Mindset.

I set the goal that by April 2023, at least 75% of my students in will demonstrate a growth mindset in in one of the following components of their art-making.:

Observational Skills
Design-Thinking (Process / Planning / Problem-Solving)
Creative Thinking
Expression
Aesthetics -- Terms and Concepts - Elements and Principles; Composition
Skill-Building (Craft) -- Media and Techniques

In demonstrating a growth mindset, they will:

be persistent when faced with obstacles
believe that "talent" (skills) can be improved
welcome new and different challenges
be motivated by the success of others
accept that successful art-making takes practice and effort
learn from others' feedback
be encouraged by trying new techniques/methods/mediums
see failed attempts as a way to gain knowledge and experience

To measure their growth mindset, students were be assessed by using the following resources:

We discussed what growth mindset looks like in the art room:

For example:
Growth Mindset believes Believes talent can improve
vs.
Fixed Mindset believes that Believes talent is fixed

Students created SMART Goals and utilized the following questions to engage in a thoughtful conversation about growth mindset. The template is from the Art of Education.

Students took a survey on Growth Mindset as well.

Here is a comparison of this student's work from the beginning of the year to the spring time.
You can see the growth and level of improvement in his work.

This year the sophomore English Curriculum expanded to include the book "When the Emperor Was Divine" by Julie Otsuka.

After the students read this book they had the chance to hear David Sakura share about his experience at Minadoka during WWII incarceration as a Japanese American child.

The Students for Asian Cultural Awareness spent the day together. The students discussed David Sakura and what they learned from his story.

After David Sakura spoke to all of the sophomores the Students for Asian Cultural Awareness met for a day of "Activism".

The Day included the following activities for students:

Letter writing to David Sakura
Letter writing to teachers for more AAPI Curriculum
Create Poetry, Short Story or Art About Japanese American Incarceration
Pick Out AAPI Book to read
Write letter to English Teacher recommending AAPI Literature to incorporate into curriculum
Create List of AAPI movies for Teens
Create List of AAPI movies for Kids
Create List of AAPI books for Elementary Schools

The Art and Photo students had a delightful day photographing and sketching in Rockport, MA. The students sketched and photographed the famous Motif #1.

They visited art galleries and had time to enjoy Rockport.

Students had an art lesson on perspective drawing from Boston Artist Arnie Casavant.

Field Trip to Rockport, MA
Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2022
Details:
Leave at 8:45am
Return at 1:30pm to Art room and complete drawings
Cost- $10 in cash
Permission form and cash due by Friday, October 14

To Do:
Get permission slip signed by parents, teachers and school nurse Pack a lunch and snacks for the day
Pack art supplies
Wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather
Bring spending money if you would like to purchase a treat

The objective of the field trip is to learn how to draw the landscape for observation. Please watch the following video about composition.
