The It Gets Better Project, Atlantic Records, and multiple Grammy-winning superstar Kelly Clarkson are joining forces to support LGBTQ+ youth with the release of Clarkson's with studio album, "Meaning of Life."
Beginning Thursday, November 14th through Tuesday, December 5th, fans of Clarkson and supporters of the It Gets Better Project are invited to create artwork showcasing their “meaning of life.” The winning submission will be chosen by Clarkson herself and will appear as a digital postcard available to send from the It Gets Better Project website. A limited print run of the postcard will be available in packs of 10 along with a personal signed note from Clarkson to the first 250 people to donate $50 or more to It Gets Better Project. Open to submissions from the United States, Canada and Mexico. Please see the rules below for complete information. While the “meaning of life” may represent many different things to many people, in sticking with the It Gets Better Project’s goal to deliver positive messaging to LGBTQ+ youth, submissions should aim to inspire and spread a message of hope and positivity, a message that resonated with the singer. This year I am fortunate to be piloting a wonderful new resource Scholastic Art Magazine.
It offers a wealth of knowledge and a great year of wonderful art and articles for my students. We are currently reading an article from the September issue (yeah, I'm a little behind) titled " Sculpture Showdown" discussing the controversy of the sculpture " Fearless Girl" in front of Artist Arturo Di Modica's "Charging Bull". The article gives students an overview of the topic and then prompts the students to craft an argument. The magazine offers well rounded, thoughtful articles, artwork and includes a hands on lesson as well. I am thrilled to use this resource this year to enhance my curriculum. I'd love for you to check it out and share your thoughts as well. The Marble Collection’s mission is to cultivate creativity and excellence in the arts by engaging teen artists and writers in a publication process that affirms their voices and deepens their learning.
The Massachusetts High School Magazine of the Arts is the only statewide, juried print and online publication that features artwork, photography, poetry, and creative writing by teens in grades 8-12. Teen Submissions are accepted YEAR Round and can be uploaded HERE 2017-2018 BHS Reading Challenge

Read more about the project below. This blog post first appeared on Mr. Mistler's Blog Local author Johanna Hartford stopped by the fashion design class at Burlington High School this year to talk about her new young adult fantasy novel, "The Ivory Rite," which tells the tale of Queen Diem. "QUEEN DIEM HAS A DEADLY SECRET—ONE THAT SHE NEVER ASKED FOR, AND ONE THAT COULD COST HER EVERYTHING. AS SHE STRUGGLES TO DECIDE WHO IS WORTHY OF HER TRUST, AN OMINOUS PROPHECY AND THE RESURRECTION OF A GHOST FROM HER PAST WILL CAUSE HER TO QUESTION EVERYTHING SHE THOUGHT SHE KNEW." Johanna and I thought working with the fashion class would make for a great collaboration. We tasked the fashion class with creating the iconic fashions from the novel. Johanna gave the students detailed descriptions taken from the text and students interpreted the excerpts to create these designs. This was the students' final project and was heavily weighted on their final grade. Ms. Hartford was thrilled when presented these designs by the class! Students took time to describe their designs and discuss how they made their artistic decisions. Johanna will be using some of the images below on social media to give readers a sense of the imagery from the book. I have known Johanna for about 20 years and have seen her grow as an author. She has been featured in sites like Cosmopolitan, Mogul, and Huffington Post for her riveting commentaries. The Ivory Rite is her debut novel. The Ivory Rite is now out! You can order it here on Amazon. AND..... Our very own fantastic educator Keith March Mistler designed the cover of the Ivory Rite!
